What is Castor Oil?

Is Castor Oil Anti-fungal

Castor oil is a useful essential oil made from the Ricinus communis plant. It is a thick, pale yellow liquid with a slightly bitter taste, known for its high ricinoleic acid content, which gives it unique properties.

The oil has been used for centuries for medicinal, cosmetic, and industrial applications. It’s also used as a laxative, to treat skin conditions, and as an ingredient in paints, lubricants, and other products. Nowadays, castor oil is mostly produced in India, Brazil, and China and is widely used in cosmetics. But what about castor oil’s antifungal properties?

The quick answer is yes! Castor oil has been found to have various antifungal properties. The credit goes to its unique composition, which makes it very effective against fungus.

The presence of biochemical agents like undecylenic acid in the oil is believed to be very effective against fungal growth. This acid fights against infections and makes castor oil effective against athlete’s foot and ringworms.

As per research done in 2019, castor oil was found effective against the fungus called Aspergillus niger–a common fungus that is often notorious for causing food spoilage. Another research done in 2017 showed castor oil’s antibacterial and antifungal activities. Needless to say, you can use the oil as an antifungal.

Using Castor Oil as an Antifungal

To use castor oil for athlete’s foot or other fungal infections on your body, clean the affected area with warm water and soap. After that, gently pat it dry.

Now, apply a small amount of castor oil directly to the affected area, massaging it in gently until it is fully absorbed. Cover the area with a bandage or sock to help the oil penetrate the skin. Repeat this process twice daily until the infection clears. Simple, right?

Make sure you dilute 3-4 drops of castor oil in a tablespoon of carrier oil like coconut or jojoba to prevent irritation. It will also moisturize your skin and keep the area healthy.

Note: Castor oil is pretty safe to use and even consume, but it may cause skin irritation in some. If you experience any discomfort, discontinue use and consult with a healthcare professional.
