Our skin is composed of collagen, which provides elasticity to skin tissues and prevents them from sagging. When skin stretches or shrinks suddenly, the collagen in the middle layer of the skin, or “dermis,” ruptures, causing tears.

These tears appear as white streaks across your skin, called stretch marks. As mentioned before, these narrow lines can occur in different body parts.

The most common reasons you might get stretch marks are puberty, pregnancy, specific skin conditions, sudden decrease or increase in weight, and even corticosteroid creams.

When it comes to natural treatments for hair or skin issues, coconut oil always seems to be stealing the number one spot—and for good reason! Not only does it absorb easily into the skin, but it also has superb emollient properties.

Dry skin is less elastic and thus more prone to stretch marks, and coconut oil can easily help reduce their appearance and speed up their healing.

Did you know coconut oil can prevent stretch marks from occurring? Its anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties make it a favorite for keeping skin hydrated and supple. But remember, most of these beneficial properties are anecdotal and need scientific backing to be proven 100% effective.

In the meantime, check out all the ways that you can use coconut oil to treat stretch marks.

When using coconut oil for the first time, there are two things you must bear in mind. The first is always to use virgin coconut oil.

Secondly, you must do a patch test to ensure you are not allergic when using coconut oil for the first time, even though it is usually considered safe. In case of no negative reactions, you can use coconut oil for stretch marks in one of these ways.

  • First, heat coconut oil over a bowl of hot water and let it cool to a temperature that does not feel too hot on the skin. Rub it with your fingers on all the areas with stretch marks, and leave it overnight. You can then rinse off the oil during your morning shower.
  • You can also apply coconut oil directly to your skin without warming it. You don’t even have to rub it off later, as it is quite light and won’t stain your clothes.

You can also try coconut oil blends with aloe vera, turmeric, or shea butter. Each of these ingredients can have added benefits—aloe vera can increase the production of collagen and speed up healing, turmeric reduces the appearance of stretch marks thanks to its natural bleaching properties, and shea butter can strengthen your skin, helping reduce stretch marks.
