How to Make Your Own Essential Oils from Herbs

Let’s learn how to make essential oils from fresh herbs with these easy DIY methods that are amazing for natural beauty and aromatherapy!

Making your own essential oils at home is easier than it sounds! Whether you are into natural beauty, homemade candles, or calming scents, learning how to extract essential oils from herbs can be very rewarding. Let’s read along!

Why Make Your Own Essential Oils?

It is because you will find no fillers or synthetic fragrances in them. Plus, it’s cost-effective if you grow your own herbs. Also, the process is very therapeutic and fun. So, it is great for DIY skincare, hair oil, massage blends, and even pet-safe products with care.

Steps to Make Essential Oils from Herbs

There are two ways you can do this! Here’s which one to go with and how to do it!

1. Oil Infusion (Easy and Safe for Beginners)

Things You will Need: Fresh herbs (like lavender, mint, rosemary, thyme, lemon balm, or basil), A carrier oil (like jojoba, sweet almond, coconut oil, or olive oil), A clean glass jar with a lid, Cheesecloth or a fine strainer, and a dark glass bottle for storage.

Instructions: Harvest your herbs in the morning, when their natural oils are most concentrated. Lightly bruise the herbs using your fingers, a rolling pin, or a mortar and pestle to help release their oils.

Place them in a glass jar, filling it about halfway. Pour your carrier oil over the herbs until they are completely covered. Seal the jar tightly to seal the deal and place it in a sunny spot for 1-2 weeks.

Meanwhile, shake it a bit daily to help the oils mix, and after the time is over, strain the mixture using a cheesecloth into a clean jar. You can repeat the same process in the same oil for more concentration.

Pro Tip: Store your infused oil in a dark glass bottle in a cool, dark place. It can last several months if stored properly.

2. Steam Distillation (For True Essential Oils)

This is how essential oils are commercially made. It’s a bit technical, but doable with the right setup. You will need a distillation kit (available for purchase online), Fresh herbs, ice, water, and a heat source.

Instructions: Add herbs and water to the distiller. The basic principle of this process is to use heat to produce steam that extracts the oils. Then the steam is cooled to convert it into liquid, which separates oil from water.

The last step is to collect the product, and that is the essential oil, which floats on top of the hydrosol (herbal water).

However, take caution because this method requires careful handling and the right equipment. It’s best for serious DIYers who want pure essential oil.

Best Herbs for Homemade Oils

Lavender is a top choice for homemade oils thanks to its calming aroma and versatility. You can use it to promote relaxation, ease stress, and improve sleep quality. Peppermint is another herb that brings a refreshing scent that can boost focus and relieve fatigue.

Rosemary is equally valuable, which supports hair growth and offers antibacterial and antifungal benefits. You can also try lemon balm, which is another herb with a citrusy fragrance that calms anxiety.

Basil and thyme stand out as well for their antibacterial and cleansing properties. These two are great for boosting immunity and adding a natural punch to cleaning or skincare recipes.

So, let’s start with herbs from your garden or balcony, and you’ll soon be bottling the essence of nature right at home.
