Can Castor Oil Cause A Miscarriage? Find Out!

We have heard about various precautions you should take while using essential oil, but let’s find out if castor oil can cause a miscarriage.

Pregnancy is a very critical phase in a woman’s life, and given the seriousness, females often have several questions related to the use of home remedies like castor oil. It is very vital to understand if castor oil can lead to a serious issue like miscarriage to be on the safer side.

The answer to this question depends on the study done in this regard and the research-based evidence available before drawing a conclusion.

Pregnant ladies are always asked to consult a medical expert before using castor oil because it can induce pregnancy, meaning that it can play a role in the pregnancy.

Using castor oil may cause dehydration, diarrhea, cramping in the stomach area, or contractions of the uterus. Given that a small wrong step can lead to a problem with pregnancy, we cannot rule out the possibility of miscarriage, although there is very little information about the cases.

What Does Research Say?

Miscarriage Pain

This research done on rabbits found that castor oil can cause termination of pregnancy (abortifacient effect) in rabbits. In the study, researchers gave castor extract to pregnant rabbits for three days, which led to terminated pregnancies. The rabbits also showed lower progesterone levels (a hormone necessary for maintaining pregnancy) and placental damage.

Humans definitely aren’t rabbits, but if we consider this study, we can clearly see that castor extract can have toxic effects on both the mother and the fetus.

Given the issue of life and death, we cannot rule out that castor oil plays a role in the termination of pregnancy in humans or negatively affects the pregnancy phase if precautions are not taken.

Safety Concerns in Drinking Castor Oil During Pregnancy

Drinking Castor Oil

As stated, using castor oil without consulting a medical expert can be risky. There is also clear evidence that castor oil can play a role in inducing labor, which suggests there is a connection.

It is totally risky to drink castor oil before 40 weeks of pregnancy. This is because there is a high chance it can trigger contraction and premature labor. If the time is not right, premature labor can be risky and lead to miscarriage.

Even if you use the oil for constipation, you must avoid it when you are pregnant. Castor oil might usually be safe for consumption, but you must never take it during pregnancy as everything you eat goes to the baby as well and can affect their health, even after they grow up.
