Homemade castor oil shampoo: simple, smooth and stimulating

It is so easy to make a homemade castor oil shampoo with castor oil as the key ingredient. What is amazing about the “homemade” vibe is that you can always personalize your “magic potion”.

Here is my recommendation: for a polyvalent shampoo, easy to make, smooth, simple and soft, you will only need to mix castor oil, castille soap, coconut milk, olive oil and honey. The natural shampoo will nourish any type of hair as well as cleansing and nurturing your scalp.

The ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons of castor oil
  • 40 ml of castille soap or baby soap
  • 2 teaspoons of coconut milk
  • 30 ml of olive oil
  • 15 ml of honey

*** Before mixing the ingredients, know that you can adapt the recipe to your needs. What I am presenting to you in this article is a simple and polyvalent recipe that works very well for me. I have long blond hair and the shampoo works just right. You can of course use another mix, do not hesitate to add another oil or product but please let me know, leave a little comment at the end of this article. I would be delighted to discover your personal recipes and to try them. Maybe to incorporate them in this article even!***

The recipe

Prepare your ingredients, take a bowl and put everything in there in no specific order 🙂 Mix well!

Yep that’s right, it’s that simple.

Don’t forget to find a cute glass container.  It’s nice, convenient and reusable! I think it really makes a big difference. I love to use my own products especially when they look great. Details matter don’t you think? You can even decorate it with a little sticker 🙂

Now just test it out! Run and take a shower and tell me what you think!

Nowadays, there are so many mom bloggers online that share their knowledge with us. It took me half a day browsing for the best homemade recipes for your hair and another half to test them out and incorporate castor oil as the main ingredient. I’m pretty proud of the result and I do hope you are too! Now to conclude this article, I also wanted to share with you my recipe for homemade castor oil conditioner.

  1. I made this recipe. Blow dried my hair (shoulder length). It looked like my hair was wet and it stayed VERY oily. Could not curl it. It appeared wet. 😩😞

  2. Just made the shampoo but for the conditioner I do not have the glycerin or grapefruit seed extract, what can I sub for these?
Can I sub beeswax for Emulsifying wax?
Thank you so much I cannot wait to try!

  3. Hi, I tried the recipe of shampoo without coconut milk but I substituted it with fractionated coconut oil. It was very oily and I added more castile soup. After 2 days te mixture got so think and still oily. Is it bacause I did not put coconut milk?

    • Hi Wei, that sounds about right!! the coconut milk texture is different than coconut oil – which IS thick and oily. I should imagine how it became even oilier after! You can also use aloe water if you find that.

  4. I tried this earlier today, and my hair still looks like I’m fresh out of the shower. It is so oily, it looks I haven’t washed it in two weeks. I read on a previous comment to take a hairdryer to it or to rinse longer with warmer water. I tried both, and neither worked. Please help? I really don’t want to go back to off the shelf shampoo.

    • Hey Anne! I know what you mean, this has happened to me a couple of times. Definitely don’t give up! I’d recommend readjusting the recipe to fit your needs. Decrease the castor oil and increase the amount of castille soap like Dr. Bronner’s. Just try with the shampoo, it’s likely you won’t even need the conditioner because the shampoo is so moisturizing already. This should help loads. All you need is a small quarter size to clean your hair. Let me know how it goes once you give it another go. Also make sure to really rinse your scalp well after using!

    • Hi Ishani! Yes, you should definitely be able to store this mix for several months, at least up to 6 months. I would however, replace the coconut milk with a spoon of coconut oil. It will keep longer and still bring coconut benefits to your hair 🙂 Thanks for your comment! Let me know how your shampoo turns out!

  5. I tried your shampoo recipe today! I loved how it felt while I was washing my hair…but my hair feels really oily after rinsing. Am I missing something? Should I be rinsing with something other than water??? Or is this how it’s supposed to feel afterward? I haven’t dried my hair yet, maybe that will help.

    • Hi Stephanie,
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with me! Isn’t the feeling just great? Sometimes I also get this “oily” feeling after rinsing, but sometimes that means I didn’t massage/scrub enough to REALLY wash off the residue. After blow-drying it should feel smoother and lighter, does it? Let me know! Otherwise rinsing a little extra next time with nice hot water. 🙂 If you try other recipes, let me know how you like them! x

  6. Hi, I am keen to try out your castor oil shampoo. I am a little concerned about using honey. Does it bleach hair or cause greying?
Is there anything else I can add instead of honey?

    • Hi Prema! Yes definitely give it a go. The honey should not cause bleaching or greying, but if you would like to replace it with another carrier oil, like coconut oil, etc. you can do that. You can also use avocado instead of honey which also works great on hair. Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
