Does Castor Oil Help Beard Growth?

One of the most frequent questions that arise is, “Is Castor Oil Good for Beard Growth?” The answer is a resounding Yes, that lies in its unique composition. Castor oil’s rich composition, featuring essential nutrients and its standout ingredient, ricinoleic acid, improves blood circulation in the hair follicles. This enhanced blood flow can stimulate the growth of facial hair.

Moreover, castor oil’s moisturizing properties ensure that the beard and the skin beneath it remain hydrated and healthy, creating optimal conditions for robust and even beard growth. So, if you’re seeking a natural and effective way to enhance your beard, castor oil is a promising choice to nurture the beard of your dreams.

Benefits of Castor Oil for Beard

The benefits of castor oil for beard extend beyond just encouraging growth. Here’s a rundown:

1. Stimulates Beard Growth:

Castor oil’s ricinoleic acid content helps stimulate blood circulation to the follicles. Increased blood flow to the facial hair roots encourages hair growth, thereby filling in sparse or patchy areas in the beard.

2. Moisturizes the Beard and Skin

The oil acts as a humectant, sealing in moisture. It combats dryness not just in the beard but also the skin beneath it, thereby preventing itchiness and discomfort.

3. Prevents and Treats Beardruff

Beard dandruff, commonly known as “beardruff,” is often caused by dry and flaky skin. The hydrating properties of castor oil counteract the dryness, providing the necessary moisture to both the beard and underlying skin.

4. Adds Volume and Luster

Castor oil is denser compared to many other oils, making it an excellent option for adding volume to your beard. It provides a protective coating on the hair shaft, leading to a visually fuller and more lustrous beard.

5. Enhances Hair Texture

The fatty acids present in the oil penetrate deep into the hair shaft, nourishing it from within. This results in softer, more manageable beard hair.

6. Fights Microbial Infections

The oil’s natural antibacterial and antifungal properties help keep microbial infections at bay. This is particularly beneficial for those who are prone to itchiness and irritation, as it creates a healthier beard environment.

7. Reduces Inflammation

Ricinoleic acid, found abundantly in castor oil, is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. This is a boon for men with sensitive skin, as it helps reduce redness and irritation that can often accompany beard growth.

8. Helps in Styling

The somewhat sticky texture of castor oil makes it excellent for styling your beard. It helps in taming stray hairs, resulting in a neater, more groomed look.

How to Use Castor Oil for Beard Growth?

If you’re curious about how to use castor oil for beard growth, here’s a step-by-step guide:

  • Wash your beard with warm water to open the pores.
  • Take a few drops of castor oil on your palm, rub your hands together, and apply evenly through your beard.
  • Gently massage the oil into your beard and the skin underneath for a couple of minutes.
  • For best results, leave the oil in for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
  • Wash off the oil using a mild beard shampoo.

Precautions to Consider

As with any natural remedy, there are some precautions to take:

  • Allergy Test: Always conduct a patch test to ensure you’re not allergic to castor oil.

  1. I use one drop of castor oil in my MCT (medium chain coconut oil). MCT has all the benefits Of coconut oil but it is far less greasy. I put this after shower on the skin underneath the beard and spread it out. It is absorbed within 30 minutes. My beard has become so soft and epic that it is hard to believe.

  2. What would be the end result if I mix castor oil with coconut oil? And also apply it regularly rather than thrice a week?

    • Hey Danish! I’ll refer you to my article on castor oil + coconut oil so you can read about the benefits of mixing these two oils. You might like the texture better than just plain castor oil, and the mixture might work better for your skin. Up to you to try! If you apply 3+ times a week that’s already pretty good, but you can of course apply it everyday before or after your shower. The best thing to do is just experiment with it a bit until you find your perfect time/setting to apply it. I usually use castor oil and almond oil as an after-shower moisturizer (instead of using store bought lotion). It hydrates well, similarly to what coconut oil would do (but I’m out at the moment I have to get more!!) Best of luck and thanks for stopping by!

    • Hi there, yes you sure can! Eucalyptus oil is great natural health remedy for stuffed sinus passages, sore throats, but is also powerful when applied to your skin as it soothes and helps the healing of wounds or ulcers, etc. If you end up trialing a great castor oil / eucalyptus oil mix, let me know how it turns out! Thanks! 🙂

  3. Hi, i justed wanted to ask that I have a normal sort of beard which I as per your article let it grew for 4 weeks. What I am now left with is some bear below the chin at the neck region and near the side burns but with a prominent mustache and perhaps a French beard so to speak. So will it help if i apply the castor oil now and how much can it regulate the growth? From India a 20 year old just like to thank you firstly for the article !!!

    • Hi Suvranil! Thanks for reaching out 🙂 Glad to hear your beard growth is coming along. Yes, you can apply castor oil and it will boost your growth even more – you will notice an increase in length and probably fullness as well. Massage all over desired area daily to maximize the benefits! 2-3 times a week will also be very beneficial – it’s up to you! Thanks for dropping by and good luck on your beard growth journey !

  4. Hi Brittany,
Just want to say I absolutely loved your article. It was very helpful and interesting. Also, I’m about to purchase some castor oil so was wondering if you’ve heard of ‘foxbrim castor oil’ which I have read some good reviews on. Or can you recommend the best one?
    Kind regards

  5. Damn, that was super helpful. Been a couple of days since I’ve started using the castor oil before reading this blog. Thank you. Best wishes for your blog, from India 🙂

  6. Hi. Is it possible to grow beard if you naturally don’t have any? Will those hair follicles in the face turn into beard? Thanks.

    • Hey Vince,
It’s unlikely that if someone doesn’t have any presence of a beard that castor oil will help it become full-grown. Castor oil can definitely encourage hair follicles to grow, and sprout baby hairs that help will grow to help fill in beard spots. Try to use castor oil regularly, for at least two months, and see where it takes you. I can’t guarantee you’ll have a full beard, but it might help start the process! Best of luck 🙂

  7. Hi Brittany. I only have very thin beard, thin moustache. Can it grow? Side burns are also very short. I am an asian so just like what you see on pictures we have a very clean face, I mean very little facial hair. Hoping for your response. 🙂

    • Hi Leonard, thanks for reaching out! My boyfriend is the same, but he used castor oil and let his beard grow out for 4-5 months and ended up having a big handlebar mustache haha 🙂 Castor oil is great for thickening and nourishing the hair follicles already present on your face and in your pores. This means that new hair follicles won’t start growing where there isn’t any hair – lots of that has to do with genetics. But you say your beard is thin, castor oil can help thicken it and make it grow faster, so your beard overtime will appear fuller. Hope this helps! 🙂

  8. hello Brittany Jane, first of all thank you for this amazing article about castor oil. Well I have started applying castor oil, with coconut oil. I just want to know how many days will it take to grow a full heavy Bandholz beard.

    • Hi there! Thanks for dropping by and thanks for your words 🙂 It all depends, there is no specific number of days. For some people it can take a couple weeks up to a couple months with regular use. It’s getting into the habit of using and applying it regularly, but if you do, your beard will benefit from it! Best of luck!
